(Media-Newswire.com) - Qualified individuals can receive free college training leading to a credential in environmental technology through the Chesapeake Area Consortium for Higher Education ( CACHE ) Institute for Environmental Careers.
CACHE has approved curriculum for environmental technology courses that will qualify for a Letter of Recognition or Certificate through consortium-member community colleges: Anne Arundel Community College, Chesapeake College, College of Southern Maryland and Wor-Wic Community College. Thanks to a federal grant recently awarded to the State of Maryland, these courses are tuition-free for qualified participants now through fall 2012. Each community college has complementary curricula classes, some online, that have been approved as credits counting toward requirements for a Letter of Recognition or Certificate in environmental technology.
The Participant Application Process includes enrollment in the Maryland Workforce Exchange online: www.mwejobs.com; application to the community college ( online or in person ); completion of a college placement test in English, reading and math assessment; and meeting with the Green Navigator at the One-Stop Career Center for grant eligibility screening.
The U.S. Department of Labor has allocated funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 to support this tuition-free grant to encourage occupational enhancement in “green” industries. Expansion of a workforce possessing environmental skills is essential to meet projected growth among industries and firms supporting conservation practices in and around the Chesapeake Bay.
Maryland is one of only 34 states to earn a competitive grant from the U.S. Department of Labor worth $5.8 million to provide more than 2,000 Marylanders with skills and jobs in green industries, including energy efficiency and renewable energy.
