(Media-Newswire.com) - DALLAS – Janet Hurley, Texas AgriLife Extension Service integrated pest management specialist and coordinator for the statewide school program, will receive the Southern Region Friends of IPM Educator Award for 2011. The award is bestowed annually by the Southern Region Integrated Pest Management Center at North Carolina State University.
Hurley will receive the award at the 65th Texas A&M University Urban Pest Management Conference and Workshop the week of Jan 12-14 in College Station, according to the organization.
"The nomination panel was impressed with the impacts of your educational efforts and leadership in school IPM," said Jim VanKirk, director of the Southern Region center, in a letter to Hurley. "One panelist said that your nomination stood out in terms of innovation, initiative and national impact."
The award recognizes successful outreach and educational programs that raise awareness and widen the use of integrated pest management practices, according to the award’s call for nominations. The integrated pest management practice, according to the regional center in North Carolina, is a "science-based approach to managing pests in ways that generate economic, environmental and human health benefits."
Hurley was praised for establishing effective programs and her regional and national leadership, according to her award letter and nomination.
She was also cited for being named spokesperson for 2010 National Inspect and Protect Week, a week dedicated to pest management throughout the U.S.
Hurley's nomination, prepared by Dr. Fudd Graham of Auburn University, said: "Janet travels the state of Texas each year conducting Extension-sponsored school IPM trainings. Working with Dr. Michael Merchant and Dr. Don Renchie, she co-authored 'An Introduction to IPM in Schools: A Manual for Facilities Maintenance Professionals.' This manual is given to each person who attends an Extension-sponsored training."
