(Media-Newswire.com) - The National Conference of State Legislatures ( NCSL ) applauds the Department of Homeland Security’s ( DHS ) announcement today that it has extended the deadline for compliance with REAL ID from May 11, 2011 to January 15, 2013.
The REAL ID Act requires state-issued driver's licenses and identification cards to meet federal standards in order to be accepted for federal purposes--boarding commercial aircraft, gain access to federal facilities or enter nuclear power plants.
State legislators have always shared a strong commitment to ensuring the security and safety of our nation and our citizens. We look forward to working with the department in the coming months on additional guidance for states on compliance and to ensure the act is implemented in a cost effective and feasible manner with maximum safety and minimum inconvenience for all Americans.
NCSL is a bipartisan organization that serves the legislators and staffs of the states, commonwealths and territories. It provides research, technical assistance and opportunities for policymakers to exchange ideas on the most pressing state issues and is an effective and respected advocate for the interests of the states in the American federal system.
