Iowa State students focus on sustainability for April 9 fashion show
AMES, Iowa -- Sustainability and style go hand-in-hand at Iowa State University's annual Textiles and Clothing Fashion Show 2011, which will be held Saturday, April 9 at 7 p.m. in Stephens Auditorium. Through an eco-friendly set, this year's fashion show attendees will experience an overarching "green" theme.
(Media-Newswire.com) - AMES, Iowa -- Sustainability and style go hand-in-hand at Iowa State University's annual Textiles and Clothing Fashion Show 2011, which will be held Saturday, April 9 at 7 p.m. in Stephens Auditorium. Through an eco-friendly set, this year's fashion show attendees will experience an overarching "green" theme.
The Fashion Show showcases student designs in various categories such as street wear, special occasion, menswear and complete collections. The 29th annual show highlights a new category for eco-friendly garments, which supports and promotes the ever-growing trend of sustainable clothing. Students will model more than 100 garments, with a separate exhibition for mounted entries available for viewing prior to the show at 6 p.m.
In addition to student designs, the show features bridal gowns by guest designer and Iowa State alumnus, Matthew Christopher ( Sobaski ). Christopher created his own label, Matthew Christopher Inc., at the age of 26 in New York City. His gowns are regularly featured in publications such as Martha Stewart Weddings, Modern Bride, and TheKnot.com. While participating in The Fashion Show, Christopher will present a free, public lecture on Thursday, April 7, at 5 p.m. in the Great Hall of ISU's Memorial Union.
Industry professionals are recruited each year to assist in judging the original designs created by students. This year's judges include Basia Szkutnicka, Study Abroad director/design lecturer for the London College of Fashion, London; Lindee Daniel, entrepreneur and sustainable bridal wear designer, Los Angeles; ISU alumnus Matthew Haffarnan, merchandising assistant in textiles at Crate and Barrel, Chicago; ISU alumnus Beth Teggatz, technical design manager at Lands' End, Madison, Wis. Judging will take place Saturday, March 26, with winners announced at the end of the show.
Purchase tickets in advance at the Iowa State Center ticket office or ticketmaster.com. Tickets are $16 for ISU students/18 and under/Seniors 65+, and $22 for adults, with a discount for groups of six adults or more.
Since 1982, Iowa State students have been displaying their technical design, sewing and creative skills through The Fashion Show. It is now one of the largest student-produced fashion show in the country, with near sellout attendance of 2,500 annually.
