(Media-Newswire.com) - Season of Sailing Ambassador and Young Australian of the Year Jessica Watson today launched the 2011 Queensland Season of Sailing campaign, announced Minister for Tourism, Manufacturing and Small Business Jan Jarratt.
Ms Jarratt said the $100,000 campaign would promote all the fantastic sailing events along Queensland’s stunning coastline between April 22 and September 6, with regattas in Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, Central Queensland, the Whitsundays and Townsville.
“Queensland is Australia’s premier sailing destination and this campaign encompasses a wide range of stay and sail experiences which are bound to make Sydneysiders and Melbournites want to leave the cold southern winter to live it up on the Queensland coast,” Ms Jarratt said.
“The premise behind this year’s campaign is to encourage visitors to experience a sailing event and book a holiday package with their friends and family.
“It’s about promoting opportunities for visitors to experience Queensland’s sailing events first hand, enjoy all that the sailing destinations have to offer, take to the water and learn how to sail, have a bareboat adventure or enjoy a charter cruise.
“This great initiative provides people with a unique incentive to visit Queensland’s regional holiday destinations during the traditionally slower winter months.”
Promoted events include:
Brisbane to Gladstone – April 22-24
Etchells Australasian Winter Championship – June 9 –12
Brisbane to Keppel – August 5-8
Airlie Race Week – August 12-18
Hamilton Island Race Week –August 19–27
Magnetic Island Race Week – September 1-6
Last year’s inaugural campaign was a big success with more than 13,000 people visiting the campaign website to book holidays.
It was particularly effective within the sailing fraternity, with Queensland sailors encouraging their friends and family to head north for these events and festivals.
Ms Jarratt said the 2011 campaign would include holiday packages provided by 14 operators promoted from now until September with travel extending until 15 December 2011.
“The Sunsail Australia package allows visitors to take to the water on a bareboat charter from $99 per person. Descarada Luxury Charters offer an all-inclusive luxury two night cruise through the Whitsunday islands - a great way to relax and unwind after the Airlie Beach and Hamilton Island Race Weeks,” she said.
“I encourage everyone to take advantage of these exciting stay and sail packages, experience why sailing is one of Queensland’s favourite past times and visit www.queenslandholidays.com.au/sailing for more information.”
Ms Jarratt said Tourism Queensland was thrilled to have Queensland sailor and Young Australian of the Year Jessica Watson onboard again as the 2011 Queensland Season of Sailing ambassador.
“Jessica is a genuine Queensland inspiration who has developed an international profile, which makes her the perfect fit for Queensland’s Season of Sailing campaign.
“She is also a proud Queenslander who has the ability to raise the profile of Queensland’s Season of Sailing even further in 2011.”
Jessica will personally promote all the 2011 Season of Sailing events on her website www.jessicawatson.com.au
Queensland’s 2011 Season of Sailing campaign will be promoted through print ads in newspapers and sailing magazines, online and via social media as well as at a grass roots level via Yachting Australia’s members.
