(Media-Newswire.com) - ITHACA, N.Y. — Rudy Giuliani, the former mayor of New York City whose deft resilience in the face of tragedy helped the city cope following the Sept. 11 attacks, will speak at Cornell University’s Commencement Weekend on Saturday, May 28, 2011 at noon, Schoellkopf Stadium.
Giuliani was first elected mayor of the City of New York in 1993, where he reduced crime, reformed welfare and improved the quality of life. New York City – once considered the crime capital of the country – became the safest large city in America while he was mayor, according to the FBI.
After the Sept. 11 attacks, Giuliani immediately began leading the recovery of New York City and he was widely lauded for his steady hand during tragic times. He was named “Person of the Year” by Time magazine, knighted by the Queen of England, dubbed “Rudy the Rock” by French President Jacques Chirac, and former first lady Nancy Reagan presented him with the Ronald Reagan Presidential Freedom Award.
Earlier in his career in 1981, Giuliani was named Associate Attorney General, the third highest position in the U.S. Department of Justice. In 1983, President Ronald Reagan appointed him as the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York. Giuliani began spearheading efforts against organized crime, high-profile white-collar criminals, drug dealers and corrupt elected officials.
Giuliani earned his bachelor’s degree from Manhattan College and his law degree from New York University.
