(Media-Newswire.com) - The former bookkeeper for the Towns of Kinderhook and Greenport was sentenced to 3 to 9 years in state prison and ordered to pay $530,000 in restitution today in Columbia County Court. The sentencing followed an investigation by State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli's office, the New York State Police and Columbia County District Attorney Beth Cozzolino.
"Pegeen Mulligan-Moore stole hundreds of thousands of dollars, but she never would have managed to commit her crime if better safeguards had been in place," DiNapoli said. "This case should be an eye-opener for local officials. The proper safeguards have to be in place to protect taxpayers.
"District Attorney Cozzolino and the New York State Police did an outstanding job on behalf of Kinderhook and Greenport citizens."
Mulligan-Moore was ordered to pay $451,000 in restitution to Kinderhook. She was also ordered to pay the town of Greenport $79,000. Investigators found Mulligan-Moore misappropriated Kinderhook town funds to pay for personal credit card purchases. She deposited checks from the Town of Greenport into her personal checking account.
