(Media-Newswire.com) - University of Mary Washington Professor of Psychology Christopher Kilmartin will discuss attitudes toward gender in the sports environment during an interview airing on the “With Good Reason” public radio program beginning Saturday, July 9.
Kilmartin’s interview can be heard on July 9 at 4:30 p.m. on WCVE 88.9 FM and on Monday, July 11 at 12:30 a.m. on WAMU 88.5 FM. The program, “Real Men” is expected to be available online beginning the week of the show at http://withgoodreasonradio.org/2011/07/real-men/.
One out of every 14 players in top college football programs has a criminal record, according to statistics published in a recent issue of Sports Illustrated. Many of these crimes involved violence toward women. Anti-feminine taunts, such as ‘let’s go ladies,’ reinforce a fiction that men are sexually indiscriminate, says Kilmartin.
A new kind of motivation is needed on the field, says Kilmartin, who has taught courses on the psychology of men and is an internationally recognized expert on gender and violence prevention.
A licensed clinical psychologist, Kilmartin brought the White Ribbon Campaign, a movement to end men’s violence against women that began in Canada, to the United States. The campaign has spread to college campuses nationwide.
He delivered the keynote address at the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s first violence prevention summit held in Indianapolis earlier this year. He completed a three-year consultation with the U.S. Naval Academy on a revision of sexual assault and harassment prevention curriculum and was a consultant in the U.S. Department of Education’s 2001 Meeting on Violence Prevention in Higher Education. In addition, Kilmartin was a scriptwriter for a U.S. Army training film on the same topic and has presented at the Army Summits on Sexual Assault.
His book “The Masculine Self” is in its fourth edition and has been translated into Korean. Kilmartin also co-authored “Men’s Violence Against Women: Theory, Research, and Activism,” and “Sexual Assault in Context: Teaching College Men about Gender,” a manual based on his consultation experiences. His co-authored book “The Pain Behind the Mask: Overcoming Masculine Depression,” has been translated into both Hebrew and Korean.
Kilmartin was named a divisional Researcher of the Year at the 2010 conference of the American Psychological Association. The award was given by the Society for the Psychological Study of Men and Masculinity, Division 51. In 2007 he was named the Fulbright distinguished chair in gender studies at the University of Klagenfurt, Austria, one of only 39 such honors awarded annually worldwide. He was elected to fellow status in the American Psychological Association in 2008 and is past president of the APA’s Society for the Psychological Study of Men and Masculinity, Division 51.
Kilmartin has been a member of the UMW faculty since 1989. He earned a doctorate and a master’s degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in counseling psychology and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Frostburg State College.
“With Good Reason” is the only statewide public radio program in Virginia. It hosts scholars from Virginia’s public universities who discuss the latest in research, pressing social issues and the curious and whimsical. “With Good Reason” is produced for the Virginia Higher Education Broadcasting Consortium by the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities and is broadcast in partnership with public radio stations in Virginia and Washington, D.C.
