(Media-Newswire.com) - BATON ROUGE – During the same week that LSU was named a top tier university by U.S. News & World Report for the fourth straight year, fall enrollment figures were released, showing LSU brought in another large freshman class.
The 2011 freshman class is composed of 5,290 students, making it one of LSU’s largest freshman classes ever, despite the university being faced with budget cuts over the past few years and having several million dollars less in scholarship funds to give to new students.
Since LSU implemented admission standards in 1988, this year’s freshman class is the fourth largest, behind the classes in 2004, 2010 and 2003.
LSU’s overall enrollment stands at 28,985, a 1 percent increase from 2010, when enrollment figures recorded 28,771 students.
“Another freshman class of this magnitude shows that LSU is indeed the state’s flagship university, as well as a top national university, despite some of the difficulties we’ve faced over the past few years,” LSU Chancellor Michael Martin said. “LSU recruiters, faculty and staff are to be commended for their hard work in bringing in and retaining these students and making LSU one of the most attractive places to receive an education.”
Overall undergraduate enrollment increased from 23,686 in 2010 to 23,980 in 2011, an increase of 1 percent and a difference of 294 students. Professional school enrollment increased from 375 in 2010 to 401 in 2011, a 7 percent increase and a difference of 26 students. Students enrolled in the School of Veterinary Medicine are categorized as either ‘professional’ or ‘graduate’ students, depending upon the degree they are earning.
