(Media-Newswire.com) - Eastern Michigan University's Flora Du, who served as president of an EMU student organization that promotes understanding of supply chain and operations management, has been recognized for exceptional leadership and volunteer service by the industry's leading professional organization.
APICS The Association for Operations Management, known as the global leader and premier source of knowledge in supply chain and operations management, honored Du with its 2011 Student Voluntary Service Award for her efforts with EMU's APICS chapter.
"Your steadfast leadership in the APICS community and dedication to the student chapter at Eastern Michigan University merit this prestigious award," the organization told Du in a letter announcing her award.
APICS, with headquarters in Chicago, offers guidance in production, inventory, materials management, purchasing, and logistics. Since 1957, individuals and companies have relied on APICS for training, resources, and its worldwide network of industry professionals.
The EMU chapter, based in the College of Business, seeks to develop students' understanding of the field and to promote continuous learning. The chapter organizes plant tours, monthly general speaker meetings, and encourages students to attend the Detroit APICS Chapter professional development meetings.
Du recently finished her bachelors in accounting in the EMU College of Business, and is now pursuing a masters in information assurance in the EMU College of Technology. Her hometown is Guangdong, China.
"The essence of the field of operations management and supply chain management is to find a better or more efficient way to operate manufacturing and service companies as well as transferring products," Du says. "I have applied these principles to running EMU/APICS and helping with many volunteer projects in the College of Business for the past three years. I tried to do the best job I could, and thus this award is a great honor to me."
Said David Mielke, dean of the EMU College of Business: "This is a wonderful recognition. It a great example of one of the things we tout at Eastern, which is our students' commitment to service."
"Flora is most deserving of this award," said Nesa Wu, a professor of Operations Management and Decision Sciences who serves as faculty advisor to the EMU APICS chapter and nominated her.
In her nomination letter, Wu highlighted Du's achievement as a member of the EMU/APICS Board of Directors for more than three years of dedicated service as president and as writer/editor of the chapter's newsletter.
Wu also recognized Du's professionalism in attending the APICS case competition and attending three International APICS conferences.
In addition to Du's honor, the EMU chapter received the APICS platinum award for the 10th consecutive year. It is the highest award any APICS student organization can receive. Eastern was one of only seven university chapters recognized among the nearly 200 worldwide.
Du and the EMU chapter were honored last month at the APICS International Conference and Exposition in Pittsburgh.
