(Media-Newswire.com) - Visiting artists Jun Qian on the clarinet and pianist Kent McWilliams will perform in concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14, at Montana State University's Reynolds Recital Hall.
The two will perform selections by a variety of modern composers including Chen, Cadenza, Morel, Yi, Widor, Sheng, Yi, Gougeon and Poulenc.
Tickets to the concert are $10 for general admission and $5 for students and are available at the door.
Qian is a Chinese-born American clarinetist who joined the music faculty at Baylor University as the clarinet professor, and the Waco Symphony as principal clarinetist, in 2012. He is also an endorsing artist for Paris-based Selmer Company. From 2007 to 2012, he was the clarinet professor at St. Olaf College. Qian won first prize in the Orchestral Excerpts Competition and third prize in the Solo Competition at the International Clarinet Association Young Artist Competition in 1997--the first artist in ICA's history to win both awards.
McWilliams has played in more than a dozen countries, and has been an award winner at the competitions of Porto ( Portugal ), the Regina Symphony, the Canadian Music competitions and the Canadian National Competitive Festival of Music. He joined the faculty of St. Olaf College in 2001 after having previously taught at the Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. He is an experienced judge and clinician, having presented performance and pedagogy workshops to teachers across North America for the Carnegie Hall Royal Conservatory of Music Achievement Program.
Qian and McWilliams have just finished a CD project, "East meets West," that will be released Nov. 1.
Prior to their recital, both musicians will conduct master classes that will be free and open to the public. Qian's master class in the clarinet is at 4 p.m. in room 184 of Howard Hall. The piano master class, also at 4 p.m., will be held in Reynolds Recital Hall.
Reynolds Recital Hall is located in the MSU School of Music's Howard Hall, located near the intersection of 11th Avenue and Grant Street.
