(Media-Newswire.com) - The eighth-ranked Lewis & Clark women’s basketball team has clinched the Northwest Conference regular-season championship with Saturday night’s 79-53 win over Pacific Lutheran.
Ending the regular season at 14-2 in conference play ( 23-2 overall ), the Pioneers go into the conference tournament this week as the top seed. Coach Juli Fulks’ squad will host an opening-round game on Thursday and, should they win, the tournament final on February 23. The tournament winner receives an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
Although the Pioneers tied for the conference regular-season championship two years ago, Saturday’s victory gives the program its first unshared league title since Lewis & Clark joined the NCAA in 1996.
In news announced Thursday, Pioneer senior Kristina Williams was named Conference Player of the Year–the second time she has received the honor–and senior Sara Villanueva was named first-team All-Conference.
Lewis & Clark holds on to its No. 2 ranking in the NCAA western region, behind only Simpson College of Iowa.
The men’s team closed out its regular season with a 55-50 victory over Pacific Lutheran on Saturday. Seeded fourth, the 10-6 Pioneers will travel to Spokane, Wash., to challenge first-place Whitworth in the opening round of the conference playoffs on Thursday night.
Senior guard James Hollins was named conference player of the week after a 25-point, eight-rebound performance in the win over Pacific Lutheran.
